During these thirty years of war settlements were heavily destroyed in this region. Many of them were completely deserted for a time or had least lost the greatest part of their population. Almost all settlements were built up again, but it took about 50 years after the end of the war to reach the figure of prewar population. Former inhabitants returned. Immigrants came from many regions of Central Europe. An excess of birth was a third important reason. Sovereigns, who ruled over territories of quite different largeness, lords of manors and immigrating skilled workers were mostly responsible for this recolonization.
